Winners at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo will receive medals unlike any other. They’ll still look like traditional gold, silver, and bronze awards—but they’ll be made out of metals extracted from recycled electronics. Since April 2017, Japanese residents have been donating their old cell phones, laptops, and other gadgets. Now the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project says it’s collected 47,488 tons of discarded devices—which might have contaminated soil or groundwater with toxic chemicals, such as lead or mercury, if thrown away. Instead, the devices will provide the 67 pounds of gold, 9,039 pounds of silver, and 5,952 pounds of bronze needed to create approximately 5,000 medals for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. “In this way, the medals become memorable for everyone,” says Takeshi Matsuda, a four-time Japanese Olympic swimming medalist, “not just the athletes.”
