This aerial view of Mexico Beach, Florida, reveals the utter devastation caused by Hurricane Michael last month: Many homes were pulverized, leaving only foundations where they used to stand, dozens of people were killed, and trees were uprooted from the ground. Residents have begun to rebuild, but it’ll likely take years before everything is back to normal. Michael slammed into Florida’s Panhandle with wind speeds of 155 miles per hour before moving up the coast through Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia (see map). It was the fourth most powerful storm to ever hit the United States. As Tanya Castro, the interim city administrator for Mexico Beach, told NBC News: “So much is just gone.”
