Jalaiah Harmon loves to dance. Last fall, the ninth-grader from Atlanta created the original choreography for the Renegade dance and posted a video of it that went viral. But she was dismayed when others began copying it without giving her credit. Many TikTok influencers, including star Charli D’Amelio, posted videos of themselves doing the dance, but no one mentioned the choreographer. This upset Jalaiah, who believed she could have potentially received money and fame for her work. However, she and her fans persevered, spreading the word as best they could through videos and comments—and now Jalaiah’s finally starting to get the recognition she deserves. In February, she performed the Renegade in front of thousands during the NBA All-Star Game. And she doesn’t harbor hard feelings about what happened. “We’re all inspired by other people,” she says. “We make up a dance and it grows.”
