You’ve probably seen globs of chewing gum stuck to the sidewalk. The main ingredient is often a rubber-like material that doesn’t biodegrade, so those gross clumps can last for a long time. Recently, two French design students, Hugo Maupetit and Vivian Fischer, came up with a plan to keep gum off the streets: recycling it into skateboard wheels. They installed collection boards in Nantes, France, where people could stick their chewed pieces. The sticky wads were later cleaned, melted, and molded into colorful wheels. Although they still need companies to sell the wheels, they’ve already had many requests from skateboarders who want to use them. Ultimately, Maupetit, 23, says he wants this project to encourage others to get creative to help the environment. “I hope it can inspire people not to limit themselves in what they can recycle,” he says. “I hope it can motivate students to reconsider some unused material.”
