Push-Button Pizza

Pizza from a vending machine? People in Italy—considered the birthplace of the food—began trying it in June, when entrepreneur Massimo Bucolo installed a machine in Rome that pops out a freshly cooked pizza within three minutes. Mr. Go operates 24 hours a day and is the first vending machine to make a customized pizza from scratch. Each pizza costs about 4.50 euros, or $5.40. Customers can watch the contraption work through a small window: Wheels turn as dough is mixed, kneaded, and slathered with toppings before being cooked in an infrared oven and plopped into a box. Some members of Rome’s pizza-loving population have been critical of Mr. Go, but Bucolo hopes it’ll catch on, especially with people looking for food after most restaurants are closed for the night. And so far, plenty seem willing to give Mr. Go a try. “Not bad,” said one hungry customer after taking a bite, “considering it was made by a robot.”
