LONGEST LASTING EMPIRE
Its origins date to 27 b.c., according to most historians, the year Octavian overthrew the Roman Republic and became Emperor Augustus. The eastern half of the Roman Empire, based in Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey), lasted almost 1,500 years—until the city fell to the Turks in 1453 A.D.
