Get ready for some fresh faces on American coins. Next year, the U.S. Mint will begin releasing new quarter designs featuring trailblazing women, honoring up to 20 over the course of four years. The first five designs, due in 2022, will include celebrated author Maya Angelou; Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space; and Wilma Mankiller, the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Officials have encouraged the public to submit suggestions too. In the past, only a few women, such as women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, have been featured on U.S. currency. That’s why this new initiative is receiving bipartisan praise. “Our story would not have been possible without these women who came before us,” Senators Deb Fischer, Republican of Nebraska, and Catherine Cortez Masto, Democrat of Nevada, who introduced the legislation in the Senate, wrote in a recent opinion article. “We look forward to being reminded of their legacies every time we see their faces on a new quarter.
