Peter Park, of Visalia, California, entered law school when he was just 13 years old, completing it simultaneously with his high school studies. At age 17, he became the youngest person ever to pass the California bar exam. Now 18, Park was sworn in as a prosecutor for Tulare County in December and spoke with Upfront after winning his first jury trial.

Q: How was law school at such a young age?

A: My dad told me anything difficult is actually not difficult—it’s just unfamiliar. At first, I didn’t understand what I was reading, but over time, as I got more familiar, it became easier and easier.

Q: How has your age affected your work as a prosecutor?

A: I don’t have as much life experience, but I’m a quick learner and I’m good with technology. And I’ll have about 10 years of experience when other people my age start graduating from law school.

Q: What was the highlight of your law school experience?

A: The bar is a two-day exam. I’d been studying for it for four years, and the relief I felt when I finally finished it—I think I was happier when I finished than I was when I got the results.

Q: How’s your job so far?

A: As a prosecutor, I can see that I’m helping the victims and helping the community and keeping everybody safe. I’m very thankful that I’m in this position now.
