East Carolina University student Parker Byrd made headlines in February when he played in a Division 1 college baseball game with a prosthetic leg. According to mlb.com, he appears to be the first to do so in more than three decades. Byrd’s right leg was amputated after a boating accident in 2022. He underwent 22 surgeries in 45 days and was unable to play baseball with his team, the Pirates, as a freshman. But Byrd—an infielder and right-handed pitcher—refused to give up hope and ultimately made his collegiate debut during this season’s opening game. As he walked to home plate for the first time, the crowd got to their feet to give him a loud ovation, and Byrd removed his batting helmet to show his appreciation. Moments later, he drew a walk. The Pirates ultimately won 16-2 against Rider University. After the game, Byrd thanked his team and fans for their support. “Chill bumps, man, it’s absolutely phenomenal,” he told reporters. “I couldn’t be more thankful to have the opportunity I had today.”
