There are plenty of stadiums around the globe for men’s sports—but Kansas City, Missouri, is building the world’s first one specifically for a professional women’s team. The Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League will begin playing in the $120 million facility next spring. The stadium will initially seat 11,500 fans, with room to expand to 22,000 later. Officials estimate the venue will bring about $1 billion in economic growth to the area. Some experts are calling this a breakout moment for women’s sports, noting that the stadium’s construction coincides with record interest in the Women’s World Cup this summer. But city officials say support for the new venue shows there’s excitement about more than just the big championships. “Every four years, I think we get this new sentiment,” Mayor Quinton Lucas told ABC News. “But this stadium says this is permanent. This interest in women’s professional sports, our respect for them, our love for them, our investment is something that’s permanent.”
