Shooting for the Moon

Influencers in France will have to think carefully before they post on social media. The country recently passed a law making influencers disclose when they’re using filters on photos or videos, using retouched images or A.I.-created faces or figures, or being paid to promote a product. Violators could face up to two years in prison, a fine of about $320,000, and a ban from carrying out commercial activities on social media. Although the punishments are steep, some influencers have come out in support of the law, hoping it will help combat unrealistic beauty standards among young people. Officials say they’re not looking to lay blame, but are simply trying to regulate the industry. “Influencers create jobs, value. They are in the most part extremely creative, imaginative, and bring a lot to the French economy,” economy minister Bruno Le Maire told a French news outlet. But “the party is over for all of those that think you can cheat on the internet.”
