Ever wonder what it’d be like to serve on a submarine? Now you can get a sense of it for yourself: The USS Cobia, which played a major role in World War II (1939-45), is available to rent for overnight stays through Airbnb. Commissioned in 1943, the 312-foot-long Cobia sank 13 Japanese ships as part of the U.S. war effort. In 1986, it became part of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc. Today guests who book a stay—starting at $500 per night—can tour the vessel and watch a nautical-themed movie in the onboard theater. The ship stays above water, and guests sleep in sailors’ bunks. The Cobia was built for seaworthiness over comfort, which means some sections can feel a little narrow or cramped. But museum officials say that’s an important piece of the experience. As museum director Kevin Cullen told Business Insider, the goal of the program is for guests to have “a moment of recognition of the tremendous sacrifice that submariners in World War II underwent.”
