How did Achilles, a warrior from Greek mythology, prepare for battle? What did Cupid think about love? Now you can ask them, as several famous statues in France recently started speaking their minds with the help of artificial intelligence (A.I.). Visitors to the Palace of Versailles—the royal residence of France’s monarchs from 1682 to 1789—can now launch audio chats on their phones with 20 sculptures in the gardens. (You can also try it at home with the palace’s app.) The conversations reveal anecdotes, historical facts, and secrets about the palace. Versailles is one of the most popular heritage sites in the country, attracting more than 8 million visitors a year. But the vast majority are tourists, and their average age is 40, palace officials say. So they’re enlisting A.I. in hopes of luring younger and more local audiences. The statues create a “link between the past and the future,” says Julie Lavet, who helped develop the A.I. for the project.
