They may just be colorful plastic bricks, but some LEGO® sets are now worth their weight in gold. In recent years, certain sets have skyrocketed in value and become high-priced collectibles. Rare kits can go for thousands of dollars: The LEGO San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Spider-Man, for example, is valued as high as $16,846, while a T. rex kit fetches nearly $9,000. And because LEGO often discontinues sets after about two years, even cheaper ones can see their price tags grow exponentially over time. There’s also a growing black market; last year, California stores reported LEGO thefts totaling more than $100,000. Other nostalgic toys have rocketed in value too, with video games, Pokémon cards, and more selling for thousands or even millions of dollars at auction. That’s why children’s toys have become an investment opportunity for many. “It is something that people love,” says Shane O’Farrell, a LEGO investor who made $500,000 in sales in 2023, “and it’s something [that’s] easy to sell.”
